Gideon came to the Vivid Vale as a cryture-slaying mercenary. Having lost his family to a pack of wild crytures, he dedicated his life to hunting down any of them that posed a threat to humans. So strong was his disdain for crytures, that he refused to use any of them in battle, preferring to hunt them with traps, stealth, and bow. His skill as a woodsman piqued the interest of Duke Oakthorne, who saw him as a misguided version of his younger self. Over a couple years, the Duke regularly hired Gideon to accompany the militia's excursions, hoping that exposure to conjurers and their crytures would moderate his views. Eventually, he came around to Arthur's way of thinking, acquired his first cryture, and joined the Viridian Order. It wasn't long before Gideon rose through the ranks and earned his own lordship over the village of Wilderglade.

While he has accepted crytures as beneficial companions, Gideon still sees wild crytures as a scourge on humanity and hunts them with the same fervor as before. Viridian Order members under his purview are trained in the same techniques of stealth and tracking that he perfected to root out nests of crytures that may endanger the locals.
